Hike the sangres

A curated guide to the three best day hikes in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains right outside your door — from an easy creekside stroll to a stunning alpine lake at nearly 12,000 feet. While the Crestone area is home to four fourteeners, there is plenty of extraordinary hiking available for every level without ever setting foot on a summit route. Here are three trails where the land itself does the teaching.

🥾 South Crestone Creek Trail –Easier| A gentle introduction to the Sangre de Cristos, following the creek up through shaded forest toward the Willow Creek Trailhead. Perfect for a shorter outing or a warm-up hike. View on AllTrails


🥾 North Crestone Creek Trail - Moderate | 7–11.4 miles out & back .A steady climb through pine and aspen forests along a pristine creek, with sweeping views of the San Luis Valley as you rise above treeline. Great for solitude — low traffic and no 14er access keeps it peaceful. View on AllTrails

🥾 Willow Lake Trail Hard | 9.1 miles out & back. One of the most stunning hikes in Colorado — forests, wildflowers, waterfalls, wildlife, and a breathtaking alpine lake at 11,400 ft with views of Kit Carson and Challenger Peaks. A true bucket-list trail. View on AllTrails
